These days we’re used to the concept of a whole movie universe; however, the likes of Marvel are based upon superheroes from different planets and the concept that the world is bigger than just us.
However, when you look back at film history, Star Wars first started this narrative. It introduced the idea of a whole universe for storylines to take part in and opened up the possibility of something new to filmmakers of the future.
Upping the Game of Sequels
Although there had been successful sequels before Star Wars, they were mostly only ever considered an option if the first film had been a hit. Even then, the second film would generally be a standalone film with some mentions of the first rather than a continuation of the storyline fans had already been introduced to.
George Lucas changed this with Star Wars when he announced the title of new films before others had even been completed – he even introduced the idea of prequels early on. The films all intertwined & helped to explain storylines across several films.

One thing that Star Wars does well, which not every film can pull off, is the mentioning of events, places, and people that we haven’t been introduced to in the film. Referring to events we have no idea about could be risky because it could confuse the viewer.
However, Star Wars adds to the feeling of the universe being bigger than even the movie can explore, allowing viewers to imagine boundaries beyond their wildest dreams.
There is no denying that the technology and cinematography that have gone into creating the Star Wars films are second to none, and it is this that has helped it be one of the most successful film franchises of all time.
